Amazon Prime Music ties up with IPRS for content

Amazon Prime Video

One area of focus for Amazon is to produce originals from South India.

Earlier this month Amazon launched its online music streaming service in India with the service is available for Amazon Prime members, which costs Rs 999 per year. Apart from expanding its existing customer base, Amazon has to contend with a host of other competitors, including home-grown Indian companies and this requirement for adding local content becomes lot more critical. Apart from English, Amazon Prime offers content in 5 Indian languages now. Amazon's music service is free of ads and has a catalog featuring regional content from languages including Hindi, Tamil, Punjabi, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam.

Asked if Amazon could begin streaming cricket in India, a country of 1.2 billion people famously obsessed with the sport, the executives said they were looking at sports content opportunities globally. These are mostly movies and shows.

Amazon Prime Video's global vice president, Tim Leslie, told Reuters the company's acquisition of original Hindi content has paid dividends. Online retail is booming in the South Asian nation and its media and entertainment market is tipped to grow to more than $31 billion in two years, from $22.7 billion in 2017. This is a formidable line-up and another area Amazon is yet to fully explore is the live-streaming of sports events.

Amazon India announced a new collaboration with The Indian Performing Right Society (IPRS) for its recently launched ad-free music streaming service, Amazon Prime Music.
