Alex Ovechkin joins elite company, nets 600th career goal

Winnipeg Jets' Patrik Laine celebrates his goal with teammates Nikolaj Ehlers and Paul Stastny during the first period of an NHL hockey game against the Carolina Hurricanes Sunday

Ovechkin's arms flew over his head as he kissed his glove and waited to hug his teammates, a huge smile across his face, his tongue sticking out. Ovechkin scored goals 599 and 600 of his career against Winnipeg to get to 42 this season.

Right wing Tom Wilson sent a centering pass toward the net, just out of Ovechkin's reach.

F Alex Ovechkin became the fourth fastest player in National Hockey League history to reach 600 career goals. "Of course you want to do more and more". The old lion and the young gun.

"When I played here, it's amusing, you always want to get the puck on his stick", said Hendricks, who was in the penalty box for Ovechkin's first goal.

Ovechkin tosses a puck into the stands (right in front of me). I was watching it.

"That's pretty unbelievable to reach that", Laine said Monday morning. "I was there when he made history, so I can maybe watch that someday and show that I was there getting the minus on the ice". Ovechkin has scored more than 50 goals in a season seven times and more than 40 goals nine times.

You don't score 600 goals without registering some serious highlights along the way, and reaching the 600-goal plateau in such a short time solidifies Ovechkin as the greatest scorer of his generation, as only three other players were able to reach that benchmark in under 1,000 games played.

"It's unbelievable, it's insane", Wilson said.

Capitals: Visit the New York Islanders on Thursday in the first half of a home-and-home back-to-back. Evgeny Kuznetsov scored the OT victor.

"When you look at those numbers, you don't even think, '599, 600, eh...', but then when you understand, you go, 'Holy f-- that's a lot of goals", Kuznetsov laughed.

"When I score 599, I felt like, 'OK I still have to make a push two periods,"' Ovechkin said.

"It's on us if we don't get him the puck".

Caps owner Ted Leonsis spoke highly of the Russian winger, saying that the team should "never take him for granted". "It's really remarkable what he's accomplished". "I'm very proud of him", Leonsis said. "I can tell my grandkids, my kids, I played with Ovechkin". It was of little surprise he delivered in what was a showdown with another fellow 40-goal scorer in Laine, who idolized Ovechkin growing up.

"When you score big number, it's like, "Okay it's over" and you have to move forward", Ovechkin said. "I don't have a good overtime the last 10 games probably".
