31 coworkers just won one of the biggest Canadian jackpots ever
More than 30 Newfoundland construction workers became instant millionaires February 28 when the Atlantic Lottery Corp. handed them a cheque worth a whopping $60 million.
Come By Chance, Newfoundland is home to the refinery where 31 workers pooled their money to buy a winning lottery ticket.
She says 26 of them plan to return to work at the Come By Chance refinery, despite the massive win.
The instant millionaires appeared Wednesday in a ceremony to pose with their photo-op check and wore matching shirts and beaming smiles.
All the winners are members of the Boilermakers Local 203 trade union at the refinery.
For three months, the group had been buying lotto tickets. For Moore Hickey, that's multiplied by two since her husband Lee also kicked in $5 for a group purchase of $155 worth of tickets.
It turned out to be a pretty rewarding return on investment. One share remains in dispute. "I was afraid to walk away from it", Sherry Moore Hickey said about the call she got from a colleague at about 4:30 Saturday morning telling her he thought their group won.
The odds of winning a Lotto Max jackpot are about one in 28.6 million according to the Atlantic Lotto Corporation.
Other winners within their group include a father and son, and identical twin brothers.
Many of those who will share in the win, told they were going to spend it on mortgage repayments, buying a new auto or children's education. For five of the workers, that's enough - they are planning to retire.
"We need to see it through", Moore Hickey said.
