3.2 lakh rat-kill tablets bought: Maharashtra govt

Gotta' catch them all

Senior BJP leader and former Maharashtra minister Eknath Khadse on Friday demanded an inquiry into Maharashtra secretariat's rodent killing contract given to a company which killed 3 lakh rats in just seven days. Khadse alleged that the company's claims-which effectively meant that almost 32 rats were culled every minute-merited suspicion. "Looking at the numbers, it is estimated that around 45,628.57 rats were killed per day". In comparison, the BMC killed six lakh rats in Mumbai in two years.

The RTI documents obtained by BJP MLA Charan Waghmare, on which Khadse had relied, do state that 3,19,400 rats were found in Mantralaya.

Mr. Khadse further said the duration of work mentioned in the tender is six months, while it is two months in the work order. A survey had found that there were almost 3,19,400 rats in the complex and a company was awarded a contract to complete pest control in six months.

The Pied Piper of Hamelin has been put to shame by a private pest control firm in Mumbai that has apparently eliminated a whopping 3,19,400 rats - a nice even number - in a week from the state secretariat building.

Khadse on Friday demanded an enquiry into a rat company given a contract to kill the rodents.

Strangely, no one can recall seeing the resultant 9,125.71 kg of carcasses being carted away - a sight not easily forgotten. While 1,901.19 rats were killed in an hour, 31.68 were eliminated in a minute.

Referring to farmer Dhrama Patil's suicide, the former minister alleged that Patil had consumed the poison, which was brought to Mantralaya for rat killing.

Khadse said that no permission had been taken from GAD or Home department to store the poison in Mantralaya and the company had no permission to handle it either.

Minister of State Madan Yerawar said the state government would table information on the tender before the house.
