United States tells Russian Federation to follow nuclear limits under new treaty

US Russia comply with nuclear arms deal limits

February 2, 2018 (EIRNS)-In response to a media question at her press briefing yesterday, State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert confirmed that US administration has no doubt that Russian Federation will honor its commitments under the bilateral Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START) by February 5.

Known as "New START", the Treaty on Measures for the Further Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms reduces deployed nuclear weapons to 700 delivery vehicles and 1,550 warheads. The treaty sets February 5 as the deadline.

The 2 governments released separate statements confirming their compliance with the New START Treaty, which took effect in 2011.

The United States says it has reduced its deployed nuclear warheads to 1,393.

The U.S. now has 660 deployed Minuteman-III Inter-continental Ballistic Missiles (ICBM), Trident-II, Submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs), and B-2A and B-52H heavy bombers in its nuclear arsenal for deterrence. It says the administration will develop a nuclear-armed cruise missile that can be launched by submarines.

Nauert further said that the USA had 800 deployed and non-deployed launchers of ICBMs and SLBMs, and heavy bombers.

"Just another bad deal that the country made, whether it's START, whether it's the Iran deal", Trump said at the time. The deadline to verify both countries' compliance was today.

Through the Treaty's verification regime, which includes short-notice, on-site inspections at military bases and facilities, U.S.is able to verify the data provided by Russian Federation regarding its strategic nuclear arsenal.

In Monday's statement, Nauert said the United States "remains committed" to arms control efforts and "will continue to fully implement" New START.

Now in its third edition, the "New START" Treaty will expire in 2021 with the option to push the expiry to 2026 if the signatories deem it suitable.

With U.S. -Russian relations plummeting to levels not seen since the Cold War, and both countries moving to upgrade their arsenals, the status of the treaty has been closely watched by arms-control experts.
