Uber making drivers take a break after long shifts

The feature will count most driving time, including being stopped at a light, with the exception of a few things like when you're waiting in an airport parking lot. For example, someone who has picked up fares in two, six-hour spurts - without taking six hours of rest in between - would have their app disabled after the second leg.

Uber is ordering some of its hardest workers to take a time out.

As Slate noted, while the decision could help reduce the risk of sleep deprivation-induced accidents, it's pretty obvious why Uber drivers might choose to work for more than 12 hours straight in one go: Crappy pay, high costs and no benefits.

The rules will impact less than half of drivers who use the Uber app.

In the US, Uber had capped driver hours in just a small handful of cities, including NY and Chicago.

The Uber lock screen for drowsy drivers. Basically, drivers can work with Uber for the first 12 hours, and then shift to another service like Lyft until they can use Uber again.

Uber already instituted a similar policy in the United Kingdom, mandating drivers take a six hour break after 10 hours on the road. The company, which filed the comment under a subsidiary name, argued that ride-hailing was "inherently flexible" and that "rigid hour limits without an underlying safety rationale are antithetical to that flexible model".

Uber is driven by a desire to improve safety as well as raise awareness of drowsy driving. While some drivers south of the border previously said they preferred driving for Lyft, others in Toronto - where Lyft started to operate late a year ago - say they like working for both companies equally, according to The Toronto Sun.

A passenger who by any chance finds himself in any ride that is approaching its 12-hour mandatory time limit will not be booted out.
