Tim Ryan, Ohio (D): "The only function the President's budget proposal serves is to remind us how completely out of whack his priorities are for the American people".

The budget also makes deep cuts in the Environmental Protection Agency, which has been the lead agency in programs to restore the Great Lakes, slashing about 25 percent of the agency's budget and eliminating many EPA programs.

"Protecting our Great Lakes is not a partisan issue, and I will work closely with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle and fight to restore this critical funding", Bishop said.

But, as is the case with so numerous president's initiatives, he is right in insisting that if taxpayers' money is spent, results must be achieved.

- This year's presidential budget released Monday again proposes a large cut Great Lakes cleanup. The Great Lakes region alone needs more than $179 billion in upgrades, repairs, and improvements over the next 20 years to drinking water and wastewater infrastructure to meet our clean water goals.

Trump's plan looks to cut the overall Environmental Protection Agency budget by almost $3 billion - or about 34%. Members of Congress opted to fully fund the program for 2018.

That aspect of the budget blueprint didn't sit well with MI lawmakers, who vowed to keep fighting for continued funding of the GLRI. Advocates say they'll resist the proposed spending cuts.

In Upstate New York, initiative money has helped clean up tributaries to Onondaga Lake in Syracuse, improve water quality in the Finger Lakes, relocate mussel populations in the St. Regis River and prevent the spread of invasive species in Lake Ontario. Bill Huizenga, Michigan (R): "The Great Lakes Restoration Initiative plays a leading role in preserving and restoring the Great Lakes ecology while strengthening the Great Lakes economy".

Several lawmakers and environmental groups vowed to fight the drastic cuts.
