Train carrying Republican lawmakers hits truck in Virginia, one dead

Tweeted by Rep. Greg Walden We're fine but our train hit a garbage truck. Members with medical training are assisting the drivers of the truck

Although it's unusual to have passenger service on the rail line, the tracks are rated for 60 miles per hour, so the fact that it was traveling at this speed is not thought to be an issue, one of the sources said.

Benny Layne, on whose property the truck landed, said the crossing arms had been known to malfunction, sometimes coming down even though no train was approaching.

"Our train heading to the GOP Retreat in West Virginia has been involved in an accident". Members immediately tweeted out details of the crash and photos showing wreckage from the truck and damage to the train's engine. "It did derail the engine of the auto but it still took us a while to stop", Flake described.

NTSB investigators look over the scene of yesterday's crash in Crozet, Virginia.

But outside, it was a different scene.

A passenger on the garbage truck, 28-year-old Christopher Foley, was killed and two others on the truck were injured, according to police. Rep. Roger Marshall's office says the Kansas congressman and doctor helped individuals who needed medical attention, including performing CPR.

"I'm fine compared to, tragically, the truck drivers, and thankful for the prompt action of our doctors and first responders", Lewis said in a statement.

Rep. James Comer of Kentucky said about 100 Republican lawmakers were on the train when the crash made him jump out of his seat. For Rep. Brad Wenstrup, it was the second time in a year he had put his Army field surgeon training to use.

Colleague Steve Scalise was gravely wounded, and Flake ran to his aid once the shooter was down. He said it was a "hard day", adding that "today we were not politicians, we were doctors helping patients, trying to save their lives".

In addition to Foley's tragic death, at least six were injured and taken to UVA Medical Center with the unidentified driver of the truck being in critical condition.

Minnesota Rep. Jason Lewis' staff tweeted that the first-term congressman was among those taken to the hospital and was later discharged after suffering a concussion.

"No one was braced for the impact, so that was probably the most startling aspect of it", he said.

The annual policy retreat was scheduled to feature speeches from President Trump and Vice President Mike Pence. Their retreat is going on as planned - with a moment of prayer to added to honor the victims.

"The NTSB does safety investigations".
