Three changes for Liverpool against Southampton

Jose Mourinho

Virgil van Dijk partners Joel Matip in the heart of Liverpool's defence on his return to Southampton on Sunday afternoon.

Henderson had been out for a month while nursing a hamstring injury, which is the reason for Liverpool's cautious approach with their captain.

Further up the pitch the Liverpool manager goes with Emre Can and Georginio Wijnaldum in midfield, while Sadio Mane, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino will be looking to cause problems for the Saints' backline.

Van Dijk wanted to quit Saints in the summer but was forced to stay after the club refused to sell. That's assuming he plays: Jurgen Klopp must be tempted to make a few changes with Wednesday's Champions League match against Porto in mind.

Never one to shy away from squad rotation, the German will have to balance the priority to remain in a top four position and taking the strongest possible squad to Portugal - though has insisted that he is not thinking about the European Cup tie at all.

Liverpool's 3-0 victory in the reverse fixture ended a five-match winless run against Southampton in all competitions.

Liverpool have not won in any of their last three trips to St Mary's, but take on a Southampton side mired in a relegation battle under Mauricio Pellegrino.

Reds fans remained confident with the choice of team selection - satisfied that the much-aligned Lovren wasn't starting against his former side.
