Syria attack: 250 civilians killed in 48 hours

Medical staff tend to a woman injured by shelling in Damascus city on Thursday

The UN said Tuesday it is deeply alarmed by conditions in Syria's Eastern Ghouta following reports that a large number of civilians have been killed in airstrikes.

A human rights group says nearly 200 civilians have been killed in Syria'a Eastern Ghouta - a suburb of Damascus - after the Assad regime escalated airstrikes there.

Almost 400,000 people in Eastern Ghouta have been subjected to airstrikes, shelling and bombardment, the statement said.

More than 100 were killed and another 1,200 people were wounded by the Syrian regime shelling and air strikes on Monday on the besieged Damascus suburb, the rebel-held town of Hamouria, the CNN said.

Meanwhile, the Syrian government reported that five civilians were killed and 20 others were injured by rocket and mortar fire launched from Eastern Ghouta on Tuesday, according to SANA.

UN Syria envoy Staffan de Mistura warned that the escalating battle in Ghouta could turn into a repeat of the bloody fight for Aleppo, over which Damascus regained full control in late 2016 after years of fighting. In May past year, Russia, Iran and Turkey signed an agreement to set up de-escalation zones, in order to prevent airstrike-related incidents in some parts of Syria.

"The experience gained in Aleppo, when an agreement was reached with militants on their organized exodus, can be used in Eastern Ghouta", he said.

United Nations spokesman Stephane Dujarric in a statement in Newyork said the Secretary General has urged all sides to uphold the basic principles of humanitarian law, including the protection of civilians.

Doctors said medics were working round the clock treating hundreds of injured people. Syria has been embroiled in a civil war since 2011.
