Super Blood Moon over Williams Lake

It's the first time in 35 years a blue moon has synced up with a supermoon and a total lunar eclipse, or blood moon because of its red hue.

The lunar eclipse will only be entirely visible to people in the east of Asia and the west of the United States while rest of the world will get to see just a chunk of it.

Johnston has been following and writing about the Moon since 2004, when he and about 20 colleagues at NASA Headquarters would get together after work during the full moon in "celebratory attire"-which for Johnston meant his signature bow tie". The next one will happen on January 31, 2037.

A blue moon refers to a second full moon in a calendar month.

Andrea Moraes of Ucluelet took this photo of the super blue blood moon at 5:41 am. "It also happens to be during the Moon's closest approach, being within ten percent of the nearest to Earth it can ever be".

During the event, the moon is closest to earth which makes it appear four percent bigger hence the name Supermoon.

Nasa said: "While the Moon is in the Earth's shadow it will take on a reddish tint, known as a "blood moon"".

Sunrises and sunsets appear pink, red and orange because of the long distance light must travel, causing light waves to bounce in different ways, explained Thaller.

As Popular Mechanics reports, the NASA TV and livestream will start at 2:30 a.m. PT (5:30 a.m. for East Coasters), right before the eclipse enters its earliest phase. The best views were visible in the west starting at 4:52 a.m. PST. The Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles even created a time-lapse video from their perspective, so everyone could see what totality looked like (the East Coast missed out on that part). It was what NASA called the lunar trifecta: a super blue blood moon, super big and super bright.

Another will happen on January 31, 2037, a total of 17 hours before perigee.

The moon put on a rare cosmic show on Wednesday.

But compounding the situation further than the possible cloud colour is that it can be hard to spot the moon when there is a lunar eclipse, Felhofer said.
