Sony Mobile announces official policy on Android upgrades for Xperia smartphones

PS. Googles latest policy for its Pixel 2 phones says 3 years of Android updates (up from 2 years for the original Pixels). However, there's no luck for Sony's mid-range, and entry-level devices as the company confirmed that it wouldn't provide any update if the hardware doesn't meet the requirement.

The moral of the story is that if you're one of those people who want to be assured of longer software support, then pick one of Sony's flagship devices.

At last Sony also mentioned the list of Xperia devices that will get the Meltdown and Spectre patches soon.

It's nice to have a formal policy outlined, even if it just confirms what we had already ascertained, because it means users can hold the company accountable when it doesn't live up to the bar it sets for itself, however low that may be with regard to the mid-range and entry-level devices. According to the latest revision, the premium Xperia smartphones are guaranteed to receive two years of software updates. If Sony sticks with this policy, the Xperia XZ1 and Xperia XZ1 Compact should get updated to Android P and Q.

The company has also announced "Security Update Program" under which it will roll out security patches at a regular interval of time to protect Xperia devices from the latest risks, vulnerabilities and flows. "Because the Security Update Program is available to our entire premium line, select mid-range devices - timing and phasing may vary by carrier", said Sony in the official statement. It includes Xperia XA1, Xperia XA1 Ultra, Xperia L1, Xperia XA1 Plus, Xperia XA2, Xperia XA2 Ultra, Xperia L2, Xperia X Performance, Xperia X, Xperia X Compact, Xperia XZ, Xperia XZ Premium, Xperia XZs, Xperia XZ1 and Xperia XZ1 Compact. Once updated, the patch date will be "2018-01-05".
