Second White House official resigns amid domestic violence accusations

Hicks was present as Trump made the controversial remarks. Ben Cardin has called for her clearance to be reviewed, noting that she has not fully divested from her own business which could create conflicts of interest with some White House initiatives.

A second White House official has resigned amid accusations of domestic violence, according to a report by The Washington Post.

Several weeks earlier, Kelly said in a Fox News interview that Trump was not "fully informed" about immigration issues when he promised in his 2016 campaign to build a wall along the US-Mexico border. Senator John Kennedy, a Louisiana Republican, said of the allegations, "If you want to serve the public, particularly as a member of a president's staff, I don't care who you are, even if you're a Rhodes Scholar, you can't beat the hell out of your spouse".

He made no mention of the ex-wives or the alleged domestic abuse.

"If he (Trump) draws scrutiny to himself, he's OK with that". McGahn told Kelly, as CBS News' Arden Farhi has reported, that Porter's ex-wives were saying things about Porter but Porter was denying the claims.

Kelly reportedly knew about the protective order against Porter well before the staff secretary resigned. The Intercept published a picture of the black eye she says Porter gave her while the two were on vacation.

Colbie Holderness and Jennifer Willoughby have shared their accounts with the press this week, and Porter said Wednesday he's stepping down. The staff secretary resigned later Wednesday. Porter assured McGahn, another person briefed on the matter said, that the accusations from the former wives were lies. "And literally that was it".

Kelly has said he is willing to resign multiple times in the past over disagreements with the President, sources said, calling it a tactic. He said the abuse allegations would not automatically disqualify Porter.

The Flynn incident raises issues around the security clearance process beyond just the Trump administration, since Flynn's clearance was last renewed by the Obama administration.

Those would-be candidates include House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, Budget Director Mick Mulvaney and House Freedom Caucus Chairman Mark Meadows. Trump is known to frequently poll his advisers about the performance of senior staff and is often reluctant to actually fire aides.

It is unclear whether Kelly has actually offered his resignation or whether the president is ready to accept his resignation. Porter has strongly denied the charge that he struck his two former wives.

The official said staffers felt misled by how Porter played down the allegations, both to Kelly and McGahn.

Porter has maintained his innocence, which Trump pointed out.

He added, "When I return to Washington DC, I'm going to look into the matter, and I'll share my counsel with the president directly".

"That's like saying that axe murderer out there, he's a great painter", said former Vice President Joe Biden. "Translate this into every day terms - is there any other crime - and it's a crime - where there'd be an explanation the reason why we shouldn't pay attention to the transgression is because they're good at something?"
