Schools on Lockdown in Jackson Township, Ohio, After Gunshot Reported

A seventh-grader was hospitalized after suffering an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound at an OH middle school, police said Tuesday.

The 7th-grader was taken to a local hospital where his condition is unknown.

A seventh grade student in OH shot himself in a school bathroom early Tuesday, authorities say. Currently, parents and other family members are gathering outside the school to be reunited with their children.

School officials said all extracurricular activities are cancelled for today and students are being released early.

The middle school and high school in Jackson Township are in lockdown as a precaution, according to the school district.

A local newspaper reporter tweeted a photo of the scene at Jackson Memorial Middle School.

One mother of an eighth-grader at the Jackson Memorial Middle School, told ABC News that she noticed a commotion outside the middle school while driving to drop her third-grade daughter off. I just pulled in waiting to hear further information, ' she said.

Parents in the area were already on edge this week following the horrific mass shooting at a Florida school.

Police say they plan to hold another news conference around 2 p.m.
