President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed belief that Nigeria's existence as one united country is a divine arrangement and "nothing should be done to put it asunder".
None of the attendees spoke to State House correspondents after the close-door meeting which lasted over two hours.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the meeting took place immediately after President Buhari received letters of Credence from the Ambassador of Niger to Nigeria, Alat Mogaskia; the High Commissioner of Ghana, Alhaji Rashid Bawa and that of Apostolic Nuncio of the Holy Sea to Nigeria, Most Rev. Archbishop Antonio Guido Filipazzi.
The agenda of the meeting was not known as there was no briefing of the media at the end. The Police and Department of State Services (DSS), especially have been charged to step up their efforts and capacity in this regard.
The meeting was a little bit different from previous ones as heads of Nigeria Immigration Service, Nigeria Customs Service, Nigeria Fire Service, Federal Road Safety Corps, Nigeria Prisons Service, and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps were all in attendance at the meeting.
On the killings that claimed the lives of several people in parts of the country, the President said he was fully aware of the seriousness and urgency required by the nation's security and assured Nigerians that all persons arrested so far, including those arrested for illegally possessing arms, would be duly prosecuted.
The meeting with security chiefs had in attendance Chief of Staff Mallam Abba Kyari, National Security Adviser (NSA), Major General Babagana Monguno (rtd), Minister of Defence Brigadier General Mansur Dan Ali, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Geoffrey Onyeama, Minister of Interior Lt Gen Abdulrahman Dambazau were present at the meeting.
