Polish PM draws ire with claim of Jewish Holocaust 'perpetrators'

Polish PM says 'history' law not directed against Ukraine

The prime minister said Israel will not allow Iran to establish a military presence in Syria and added that Israel will act against any Iranian attempt to build bases in Syria.

"Of course it would not be punishable or criminal if you say there were Polish perpetrators, just like there were Jewish perpetrators, like there were Russian perpetrators, like there were Ukrainians, not just German perpetrators", Morawiecki replied.

"It is impossible to accept such provocative comparisons", she said Saturday evening.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday lashed out at "outrageous" remarks by his Polish counterpart Mateusz Morawiecki, who said the Holocaust had involved "Jewish perpetrators" as well as Polish.

"The Polish prime minister's statement is anti-Semitism of the oldest kind".

Labor Party leader Avi Gabbay accused Morawiecki of trying to rewrite history.

"The perpetrators are not the victims".

Fellow Zionist Union MK Itzik Shmuli also criticized the Polish prime minister, saying the next phase in his "pathetic project" would be "blaming the Jews for their own Holocaust".

Bergman himself tweeted that the Polish premier's answer was "unbelievable". He said that previous year Polish embassies had to respond 260 times to statements referring to "Polish death camps". "On the Polish soil, this was the only place on earth where all the families, all the neighbors, all the villagers were killed for helping our Jewish brothers and sisters" said Morawiecki.

Observers say the campaign, which also includes ads on YouTube, is a means for the ruling Law and Justice party to consolidate its power by rallying voters around the idea that Poland needs to be defended against a hostile outside world.

The dispute has elicited bitter recriminations on both sides. Poles believe that they are being defamed by being linked to German crimes, of which they were one of the largest group of victims. Bregman spoke of his mother, a Holocaust survivor born in Poland, and asked the prime minister whether the fact that he would talk about this subject would lead to him facing criminal charges.

Amid the dispute some Polish commentators, including in government-controlled media, have made strong anti-Jewish remarks.

He reiterated that the point of the law was to defend Poland's honour by making clear that people knew "there were no Polish death camps..."
