Pentagon Mulling Options To Move McMaster Out Of WH, Back Into Military

General James Mattis

But White House officials told the Washington Examiner that Defense Secretary James Mattis "has forwarded his recommendations" on the policy to the president.

Per CNN, officials at the Pentagon are "quietly" conducting a search for "a four-star military job suited for McMaster," who is now ranks as a three-star general. Why?

Days earlier, however, the president appeared to upbraid McMaster in a tweet referencing comments he made about Russian interference in the election.

"As you can see with the Federal Bureau of Investigation indictment, the evidence is now really incontrovertible and available in the public domain, whereas in the past it was hard to attribute", McMaster said at a security conference this month. "Remember the Dirty Dossier, Uranium, Speeches, Emails and the Podesta Company!"

"Several sources told CNN that the push for a replacement comes after months of personal tension between McMaster and Trump", the report said. Because the president is reportedly unhappy with his national security adviser and wants to "ease" him out of the White House, as opposed to outright firing him. However, with at least 10 top administration officials having already changed positions or been completely removed from Trump's team over the past year, this would not be something new for the White House to work through. Still, some Pentagon officials are concerned that McMaster has become too politicized during his stint in the West Wing and were hesitant about him returning to a prominent military role, CNN reported. Some say Trump might force McMaster to retire.

This is not the first time McMaster's job has been in jeopardy. Though far from certain, his exit from the White House would require the appointment of a third national security adviser in a little over a year.

From attacking Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Twitter to his potentially wanting to fire State Secretary Rex Tillerson for a variety of reasons, Celebrity Apprentice-esque squabbles are the modus operandi of President Trump's White House.
