Iranian airliner crashes 65 presumed dead

There are conflicting reports in the country's media as to many people on board, with estimates between 60 and 100. It said the plane was flying from Tehran to the southern Iranian city of Yasuj. The plain, however, crashed in the mountainous region of central Iran. It was an ATR 72 plane was out of the radar's reach just 20 minutes after taking off and no connection could be established between the pilot and the control room.

Reports by the Iranian media have said the flight, identified as an Iran Aseman Flight 3704, was on its way from Tehran to the city of Yasuj in southwestern Iran when the crash took place.

Aseman Airlines, based in Tehran, is the third largest domestic carrier of the nation.

The plane crashed in a mountainous area near the town of Semirom on Sunday, the news agency ISNA quoted emergency services spokesman Mojtaba Khaledi as saying.

Rescue teams have been sent to the site to search for survivors. "The plane had 50 to 60 passengers", Pir Hossein Koolivand, the head of the emergency services told the Fars news agency.
