Mississippi State baseball coach Andy Cannizaro resigns

Cannizaro resigns as MSU baseball head coach

Andy Cannizaro is officially out as Mississippi State head baseball coach, the university announced Tuesday.

No reason for Cannizaro's dismissal has been given, but the website reports that his employment will be terminated "with cause" and that "an official statement is forthcoming".

According to reports, pitching coach Gary Henderson is expected to be named MSU's interim head coach. He replaced John Cohen, who was promoted to MSU athletic director. Cannizaro had an excellent debut campaign in 2017, leading the Bulldogs to a 40-27 regular-season record (17-13 in the SEC) and the 13th regional title in program history before they lost to his former school in the Baton Rouge superregional.

"I had a wonderful opportunity at Mississippi State, but unfortunately I made some poor decisions", Cannizaro said in a statement released by the school.

"While the circumstances are hard, we are fortunate to have a coach of Gary Henderson's caliber to assume leadership of the program on an interim basis during our transition", said Athletics Director John Cohen in the school statement.

Prior to his coaching career, Cannizaro was a professional player who had stints in the Major Leagues with New York Yankees. Mississippi State met LSU in the NCAA Super Regionals and fell in two games.

The Bulldogs embark on a 12-day, nine game road trip beginning Wednesday at Jackson State.

The university did not say when they expect to make an announcement about a permanent replacement.

The Bulldogs opened the 2018 season this past weekend by getting swept at Southern Mississippi.
