Mel Kiper defends Josh Allen, likes corner, center for Bills

NFL-DRAFT Mel Kiper Jr. pegs Josh Allen to Cleveland Browns in new mock draft
Opinions seem to be split on the Wyoming signal-caller

Mel Kiper's second mock draft ahead of the 2017 National Football League draft, which was released mid-February a year ago, only ended up predicting two picks correctly, and one of those (Myles Garrett to the Browns) was obvious. It came with great fanfare and a conference call with media.

Kiper has the Chargers drafting Alabama defensive tackle Da'Ron Payne, the same selection that he gave the Chargers in his first Mock Draft in January.

Overall, scouts compare Washington to Browns wide receiver Corey Coleman, the No. 15 pick of the 2016 NFL Draft, who has been underwhelming in his two years in the NFL. Even that is fraught with peril.

There are exceptions. Pete Prisco of CBS Sports, like Kiper, has the Browns taking Allen with the first pick. He's been correct three times since 2010, nailing Joe Haden, Danny Shelton and Myles Garrett going to the Browns.

"He has the best arm of anybody in this draft", Kiper said of the 6-foot-5, 237-pound Allen. Only 36 percent of Detroit's rushes past year gained at least four yards, and they had just seven runs of at least 20 yards all season, which ranked 26.

So let's see what the New York Jets could do after trading back in the first round.

Kiper's answer: "I think with Lamar, you talk about a quarterback who when you watch the throws, there were some inaccurate throws".

"He's got great lower body strength", Kiper said.

Oliver is a really solid player, boasting good size and speed for the position. He projects the Colts taking North Carolina State defensive end Bradley Chubb.

Kiper does not like the idea of the Colts moving out, given their glaring need for a pass rusher.

"It's a very fluid situation", Kiper said. Then there's a gap between him and the second-best rusher, Texas-San Antonio's Marcus Davenport.

Kiper is leaving himself some wiggle room and says Darnold, Josh Rosen or Mayfield can do enough at the NFL Scouting Combine next month or in their pro days to overtake Allen as Kiper's top choice.

Baker Mayfield has said it would be a dream to play in NY. "Some of those guys I mentioned will be better than they're projected to be, which means in the fourth or fifth round this year, you might get yourself a pass-rushing defensive end". "He's a safety if you need him there".
