Man's meth lab caused fire in casino hotel room

In news that seems too insane to be true, police have detained a man who was running a methamphetamine lab in an Atlantic City casino hotel.

The man who rented the room to create his meth lab was arrested after a fire was detected from his room.

Their conditions were not available Thursday.

Pillar, 49, was charged with maintaining a controlled unsafe substance production facility, possession of methamphetamine and criminal mischief. It's unclear if Pillar, who was being held in the Atlantic County Jail following his release from the hospital, is represented by a lawyer.

Shortly before 10 a.m., the Atlantic City Fire Department responded to the Tropicana for a report of a fire in a hotel room on the 44th floor of the West Tower. A State Police hazardous-materials team dismantled the lab. The fire was contained to one room and was quickly extinguished.

Anyone with information about the Tropicana incident is urged to contact the Atlantic City Police Department Special Investigations Section at 609-347-5858. "Hotel rooms have been professionally inspected, and cleared to go back online tomorrow". Steve Callender, the general manager of the casino hotel said. As the Associated press noted, the hotel employee used a fire extinguisher to put out the fire, which spread from the bathroom to a bed. The hotel's evacution was partly due to smoke from the fire, which had to be vented using portable fans.

Authorities added that three people were seen on Tropicana casino's surveillance footage fleeing the room before emergency services turned up to fight the blaze.

All three individuals were later located by detectives around 9:45 p.m.in the 2400 block of Pacific Avenue in the city. They were later caught and kept in custody and two of them were released with any charges.
