Jay Rodriguez charged by FA over allegations of racial abuse against opponent

FA charges West Brom's Rodriguez over incident with Brighton's Bong

Cameroon worldwide Bong claimed Rodriguez abused him during West Brom's 2-0 win at The Hawthorns in January.

Rodriguez would face a minimum five-match ban if the case against him is proven but the 28-year-old former Burnley and Southampton player believes he should have already been cleared. "I 100 percent deny the false allegation and will take the correct legal advice to prove my innocence".

It is alleged he used racially abusive terms to insult Brighton defender Gaetan Bong. Bong, a former Cameroon global, alerted the referee moments later.

Hughton only said: "There was something said to Gaeten Bong by Jay Rodriguez which has been reported to the referee. Rodriguez words are unforgivable for the man I am!"

Rodriguez was seen pinching his nose and saying something to Brighton defender Gaetan Bong, who is black, after an on-field confrontation during the January 13 game at The Hawthorns.

Speaking after the incident, Bong alleged Rodriguez had used "racist comments".

West Brom said they "remain fully supportive" of Rodriguez.

"As a club we remain fully supportive and committed to backing Jay throughout this process", Richard Garlick, the club's director of football administration, said in a statement on the club's website.

Luis Suarez was banned for eight games in 2011, while he was playing for Liverpool, for repeatedly hurling a racial slur at then-Manchester United defender Patrice Evra.
