Iran urges Turkey to respect intl. borders

According to Tolo News, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has said the presence of U.S. military bases in Afghanistan is fueling insecurity in the region and in Afghanistan .

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu arrived in Tehran for an official visit on Wednesday and before meeting Iran's president, he met and talked with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.

"Unfortunately, today certain sides seek to alter geographical borders in the region and, following their defeat in the north of Iraq, they embarked on hatching plots in northern Syria", Rouhani deplored.

Elsewhere in the meeting, Iranian president hailed Sochi summit's role in resolving the regional issues, saying "fortunately, the tripartite relations between Iran, Turkey and Russian Federation today are very important in regional affairs, while in the current situation, the need for further consultation and cooperation is needed to resolve the Syrian crisis".

For his part, the Turkish top diplomat, blaming the United States for hatching new plots in the region to undermine the growing ties between Ankara and Tehran, called for close cooperation to thwart those schemes.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran supports Syria's territorial integrity and doesn't accept any aggression against the Syrian territories", Velayati told reporters in Tehran on Wednesday.

"We believe that we should stand up to plots that aim to undermine the territorial integrity of regional countries", Cavusoglu was quoted as saying.

The visit by Cavusoglu came as Turkey launched a major military campaign in the northwestern Syrian city of Afrin against USA -backed Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG).

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qassemi said on Monday that Turkey should end its offensive against Afrin, warning the operation would bring back terrorists to the war-torn country. Ankara considers the US -backed YPG to be a terrorist group and an extension of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).
