Georgian Former President Saakashvili re-detained in Ukraine

Mikhail Saakashvili detained and about to be deported from Ukraine

Meanwhile, Spokesman for Ukraine's State Border Service Oleg Slobodyan said that there were no legal reasons for Saakashvili's return to the country.

They had "Border Service of Ukraine" written on their uniform and the way they acted was little short of kidnapping, Saakashvili's ally Yuri Derevyanko who is a member of the Ukrainian parliament told Hromadske TV.

Supporters of Saakashvili posted videos of what they said was his detention in Kiev, showing men dressed in camouflage storming a restaurant.

On Sept. 5, 2017, the Georgian Chief Prosecutor's Office asked Kiev to take measures for Saakashvili's extradition.

Backed by a team of forward-thinking reformers, Saakashvili enjoyed stunning success as he pulled the war-ravaged, poor South Caucasus nation from the brink of collapse and made it a model of economic and judicial reform. "The fact that he is the husband of an European Union citizen has contributed to a positive decision on the Ukrainian side's request, while considering it", the statement said.

By 2007, however, he began falling out of favour with many of his foreign backers and local supporters because of his wildly eccentric and often impulsive behaviour.

Carl Bildt, a former Swedish prime minister, said on Twitter: "Depriving Saakashvili of his only citizenship was a clear violation of his human rights".

Saakashvili denies the charges, saying they are politically motivated.

At the same time, both the Ukrainian prosecution service and the Ukrainian security services (SBU), quoted by worldwide agencies, denied involvement in Saakashvili's detention and said they had "no information about the whereabouts of the former President of Georgia". He acquired Ukrainian citizenship in May 2015 and was appointed governor of Odessa region.

A friend from their university days in Kyiv in the Soviet era, Saakashvili has become an outspoken opponent of Poroshenko - who came to power after Moscow-friendly President Viktor Yanukovych fled amid massive protests known the Euromaidan in 2014.

On September 10, Saakashvili has crossed the Polish-Ukrainian border backed by his supporters, who have de facto forced their way through the border.
