Garcia-Rios Post-Fight Presser Quotes

Garcia floors Rios for ninth-round TKO

It was Garcia's first fight since suffering the first loss of his career last March against current welterweight titleholder Keith Thurman.

Garcia (34-1, 20 KOs) re-established himself among elite fighters at 147 pounds by knocking out a game Brandon Rios with one right hand in Round 9 of their Premier Boxing Champions bout at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.

From the outset, Garcia's speed advantage was obvious, and Rios, who had reunited with trainer Robert Garcia after a one-fight break, had a hard time catching up with him.

"I felt the ring rust a little bit in the beginning".

Garcia said: "I came to box, and I did that". "He's a good inside fighter and he was giving me some good inside cuts". It was a good nine rounds. He came to fight but I was prepared for it. "I did that. I came to bang; I gave the fans what they wanted - a knockout".

But that turned out to be his undoing in the eighth, when Garcia uncorked a lovely counter cross, and the head of Rios turned sideways as he crashed to the floor. Rios beat the count, but when referee Kenny Bayless asked him to take a step forward, Rios was very unsteady and wobbling, giving Bayless no choice but to stop the fight at 2 minutes, 25 seconds. I think I was breaking him down, little by little.

After a 19-month retirement, Rios (34-3-1, 25 KOs) made his return in June and defeated Aaron Herrera by seventh-round knockout.

Most thought Garcia-Rios would be the mismatch because Rios hadn't looked good against a quality opponent in years.

There were a few exchanges and the majority of the time Garcia landed more accurate sharp punches while Rios was sloppy throwing mostly smothering arm punches and landing a good shot here and there. Rios noticeably slurred his speech during the post fight interview, in which he largely complained about the stoppage. What else can I say?

"I'm a warrior, and I got up". I know they [my corner] love me and everything, but I got up fine. "Whoever they put in front of me, whatever happens, happens". I'll die in that ring. "I'm mad. I'm f--ing mad". I'm mad because I got up.

The fight started out with Garcia immediately fighting off the backfoot and Rios doing what he does best going forward and cutting the ring off. "It was my fault".

On Shawn Porter entering the ring, he stated, "I told him it's the Danny Garcia show but it is what it is".

"You want some work too?" Garcia said to Porter.

All Danny Garcia had known as a professional fighter was winning.

A man who now moves on to potential unification fights once again as he bids to land a rematch with Keith Thurman later this year. Could this mean Garcia-Porter is next, with the victor getting a rematch with Thurman?
