The 68-year-old son of Cuban revolutionary Fidel Castro, Fidel Angel Castro Diaz-Balart, has died in Havana after taking his own life, according to the media in Havana.
According to state-run website Cubadebate, Castro Diaz-Balart was in a deeply depressed state and was being treated by a group of doctors. State television in Cuba reported that he had been receiving medical treatment as an outpatient in recent months, following a hospital stay.
Known as "Fidelito" because he looked so much like his father, Mr Castro Diaz-Balart was born in 1949, before his father led the revolution that created the communist state in Cuba ten years later.
Fidelito was Castro's only child with former wife Mirta Diaz-Balart.
Through his mother, Castro Diaz-Balart was the cousin of some of Castro's most bitter enemies in the Cuban American exile community, U.S. Representative Mario Diaz-Balart and former U.S. congressman Lincoln Diaz-Balart.
Fidelito performed a key role in Cuba's nuclear programme but, was later removed from his positions when there was a fallout with his father.
Castro persuaded her to send the boy to Mexico, then briefly refused to return him to his mother, although she was eventually able to take him back to Cuba. The couple divorced before Castro took power in Cuba. The eldest son in the Castro dynasty suddenly seemed destined for greatness.
He was found on Thursday morning and is said to have suffered from depression. The fall of the Soviet Union later paralyzed Cuba's civil nuclear program, including plans to build a reactor.
Funeral arrangements will be made by the family, state media said.
