Family affair as Serena makes long-awaited return

Serena Williams Alexis Olympia

Serena Williams made her long-awaited comeback to tennis on Sunday but the 23-time Grand Slam title victor and former world No. 1 suffered defeat, playing alongside big sister Venus in a Fed Cup dead rubber. The adorable baby girl looked quite happy watching her mum play as her dad, Alexis Ohanian, laughed and chatted with friends during the doubles match.

The sisters lost 6-2, 6-3 to Demi Schuurs and Lesley Kerkhove, although the United States still beat Holland 3-1 to earn a semi-final clash with France on April 21 and 22.

Earlier Sunday, Venus Williams defeated Richel Hogenkamp 7-5, 6-1 to give the U.S. a decisive 3-0 lead, with the scheduled singles match between CoCo Vandeweghe and Arantxa Rus scrapped.

We can expect that baby Alexis will be cheering for her mother as she fully begins to compete in future tournaments.

On her daughter being in Asheville, North Carolina to witness her match, she added: "It's her first match so I'm glad she got to see it".

But this event was most notable for the return of, who hadn't played competitive tennis since winning the 2017 Australian Open while pregnant for her 23rd career Grand Slam singles title, one off Margaret Court's record.

Although she retained her power and arm speed on her groundstrokes months after post-delivery health complications, including blood clots forming in her lungs, kept her bedridden for six weeks after giving birth, there was plenty of rust in Williams's game. I'm going to try to do better.

Serena was scheduled to compete in the Australian Open this January, but made a decision to pull out after losing an exhibition match in December.

"I honestly feel better than I thought I was going to feel", said Williams, who prior to Sunday had not played a competitive match since her 2017 Australian Open victory.

Ahead of the tie, Serena had refused to be drawn on her Grand Slam hopes for the year.

Serena took to Instagram stories to show off video of her husband and child in the stands right behind her in between sets. I've broken down I don't know how many times.

Williams said: "This is literally my first time travelling with the baby and everything". I didn't know what to expect.

"It felt really good to be back the court".
