Did the flu kill North Bergen girl, 5?

2nd child death associated with flu reported in NJ

Dr. George Solter, North Bergen School District Superintendent of Schools, relayed his condolences to the family in a post on the district's Facebook page Monday.

The New Jersey Department of Health announced another hospital-confirmed pediatric flu-associated death, the second in New Jersey this influenza season. State officials will conduct a confirmatory test, according to the DOH.

The death of Nevaeh Hernandez, 6, was reported on February 12, 2018. The superintendent urged parents not to send their children to school if they have flu-like symptoms and the health department is offering flu vaccines to residents.

Hernandez's father is in armed services and is stationed in Germany, PIX11 has learned.

"Today is a sad day in the North Bergen School District as we have lost one of our own", the statement reads.

The district said during the last three weeks, each school desk has been disinfected with bleach, and door knobs, handles, toilets and sinks have also been disinfected. Solter said in the statement that during the recent flu outbreak, the district had taken "every precaution possible to make each one of our schools a safe and healthy learning environment for our students".

Health officials recommend residents get a flu shot, wash or disinfect hands frequently, cover any coughs and sneezes, and stay home and call a health care provider if sick. Additionally, we would like to express our deepest sympathies to the family of our student, our hearts, thoughts, and prayers are with them during this hard time. A cause of death has not been released, but the school did allude to the possibility of complications from the flu.
