Updated statistics from the Tennessee Department of Health show that eight children and a pregnant woman have died from the flu in the 2017-2018 flu season.
There have been record-breaking numbers this season in Oklahoma with 3,440 flu-associated hospitalizations, and 153 deaths.
There are several weeks remaining in the flu season.
The state health department only tracks pediatric and pregnancy-related flu deaths. OSDH is offering flu vaccinations statewide at no cost to recipients at all county health department sites. 25 of the children who passed were eligible to receive a flu shot.
Free flu vaccine is still available at all TDH public health clinics, and all Tennesseans are urged to get vaccinated. If you've had the flu, avoid going out until your fever has been gone for 24 hours without the use of medications, the state Health Department said.
If you do become sick, health officials have urged you to stay at home, wash your hands frequently, and cough into your sleeve to prevent the flu from spreading.
