Child suffers critical injuries when DWI driver crashes into ambulance, police say

Winston-Salem Police have charged a man with drunken driving after an early morning crash overturned an ambulance and sent several people to the hospital.

Police said that a 2003 Honda Accord and the ambulance were traveling south on US 52 when the Accord collided with the left side of the ambulance, causing both drivers to lose control.

The boy had been in stable condition before the crash north of downtown Winston-Salem but emerged from the wreck with life-threatening injuries, Newnum said.

Newnum said it appears that the crash further injured the child and left him with critical injuries.

The driver of the vehicle, Jose Martin Duran Romero, was charged with DWI.

The youngster was en route to a trauma center with his mother around 1 a.m. when the Virginia-based ambulance was struck on a North Carolina highway, said Winston-Salem Police Lt. Rick Newnum. Three adults in the ambulance had minor injuries. Winston-Salem police officers established a perimeter and soon captured the other man. He was given a $50,000 bond. His passenger, Andres Figueroa Leon, is being charged with failing to render aid or give information. The crash is still being investigated.
