Celebrating 50 years of 'Mister Rogers' Neighborhood' in Pittsburgh

A New Special Will Celebrate 50 Years of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood

In an era when much of children's TV was manic, derivative or cartoonishly violent, Rogers stood out like a calm, friendly, reassuring beacon.

The Fred Rogers Center for Early Learning and Children's Media at St. Vincent College is hosting a screening of that first episode and panel discussion at 7 p.m. February 19.

As children, it didn't matter where Mr. Rogers lived - he could be around the corner, down the street, or in another part of the country, but he always felt like a neighbor.

The first national episode of "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood" is available on Amazon.

Rogers, a 1951 Rollins College graduate, majored in music composition while at the Winter Park private college.

A forever stamp honoring Fred Rogers will be dedicated on March 23. His first job in television was at NBC in New York City, but two years later he moved to work for WQED-TV in Pittsburgh. But he moved to Canada where he eventually went on to host and produce a children's program.

"He really was the same person off television as he was on television".

A young Fred Rogers entered the living rooms of children to teach them about caring, kindness and the value of being true to yourself - a message he would continue to deliver over almost 900 episodes and 33 years. In 1969, Rogers testified before the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Communication and helped ensure that public television received the $20 million in funding that was at risk of being cut during the Vietnam War. And what's more, I'm so grateful to you for helping the children in your life to know that you'll do everything you can to keep them safe and to help them express their feelings in ways that will bring healing in many different neighborhoods.
