Cape Town's 'day zero' pushed back even further to July

The Tour will also use the tournament as an opportunity to raise awareness around "Day Zero" by encouraging the players to wear blue during Friday's second round.

Day Zero - when the taps run dry in Cape Town - has been moved back yet again, the city announced on Tuesday.

"We can not afford to slow down when the estimated Day Zero date moves out, simply because we can not accurately predict the volume of rainfall still to come, or when it will come", he said.

The pushing back of the date was largely due to a lower drop in water levels in the city's supply dams, as well as a reduction in average daily collective consumption to 523 million litres.

Neilson urged residents to not ease up on their water-saving efforts, as the city has yet to reach the targeted 450-million litres per day collective usage target.

But, the City of Cape Town is still using more water than it should to beat Day Zero.

The DA is now facing both a water crisis in the Cape and an internal crisis of its own as it battles factional infighting in its City of Cape Town caucus that has left Mayor Patricia de Lille out of the loop on managing the water crisis.

"The only way we can stretch our water supplies is to adhere to the 50 litres per person per day water allocation".

Because of the testing nature of the sport, efforts to reduce the consumption of bottled water throughout the tournament week have been made, which include trucking in 700 cases of bottled water from Gauteng for player hydration and operational areas and thus effecting no further stress on local resources.
