Anti-corruption officers arrest Latvian central bank governor

Latvia's ECB rate-setter Ilmars Rimsevics detained by anti-corruption authorities

With Latvia's central bank governor continuing to be held by KNAB anti-corruption officers, we thought we would give you (and the other English-language newswires now lifting information from LSM) the opportunity to read the first-hand statements from the officials and bodies concerned. Rimsevics spent more than eight hours at the anti-graft bureau in Riga with his lawyer, Saulvedis Varpins, before being taken away in a bureau van early on Sunday.

"There are no indications that would suggest threats to the financial system of Latvia", Kucinskis said in an emailed statement to Reuters.

The Latvian Central Bank is an independent institution and Rimsevics has been its head since 2001.

KNAB declined to comment and no reason was given for the arrest. Aseradens, a member of the ruling coalition's second-largest party, told Latvijas Radio that the cabinet will meet Monday for an extraordinary session to discuss developments.

HERE is the statement by the financial regulator on communications with the European Central Bank (Latvian only at the moment). Its spokeswoman, Laura Dusa, said more information will be released when it won't interfere with an investigation.

LTV public television reported that businessman Maris Martinsons, who operates in the construction and credit industries, had also been arrested by KNAB. The Finance Ministry said a news conference will take place at 3 p.m. on Sunday.

Maris Kucinskis, the prime minister of Latvia's bank, confirmed that none of the official nor he should intrude the anti-corruption agency's work. He has been a member of the ECB's Governing Council since January 2014, when Latvia adopted the euro.

FinCen said last week that it was seeking to impose sanctions on ABLV. It has been accused of acting as a money laundering funnel for Russian capital.
