What Is A Bomb Cyclone?

- The East Coast from northern Florida all the way up the Atlantic to the New England area could feel the effects of a massive winter storm that some forecasters are dubbing a "bomb cyclone". Plus, there might be lighting and a blizzard at the same time thanks to the bomb cyclone, which are in season from October to March, The Weather Channel wrote.

Many nor'easters - infamous big storms that wallop the East Coast - are the product of bombs, according to meteorologist Jeff Haby.

The National Weather Service said temperatures in the Berkshire mountains in western MA could seem as low as minus 35C, parts of New Hampshire and ME could experience minus 45C, and Vermont's mountain regions could feel like minus 50C.

The unusually frigid conditions sweeping Florida led to the closures of Florida State University and Florida A&M University on Wednesday.

The New York City Department of Education said it would close public schools on Thursday because of severe weather. In Connecticut, where the storm is expected to hit after midnight, Gov. Dan Malloy urged motorists to stay off the roads if possible.

Two to five inches of snow are expected, with the northeast part of the county expected to receive the most snow.

A coastal flood advisory was also issued Wednesday for a storm that is expected to move into the area during the overnight hours and continue through Thursday.

"Explosive, potent winter storm system taking aim on New England bringing multiple hazards: moderate to heavy snow, low visibility, strong to damaging winds, coastal flooding, and hazardous seas", the NWS's Boston office said in a notice around 1 a.m. Thursday.

Experts warn that parts of the USA may record their lowest-ever temperatures on Friday and Saturday.

Some of the cities breaking record-high temps include Los Angeles (85 degrees last Friday) and Fort Collins, Colorado (68 degrees last Friday).
