"You got a little bit of weed or something in there?" He quickly got off a shot that almost struck his two friends sitting on the curb.
The video indicates Smith pointing a handgun at officers, positioning it while his correct hand is stuck against a check, shooting it, and afterward positioning it once more.
"What are those, new Air Force Ones?" Smith Jr. died at the scene from his injuries.
A scuffle spills onto the asphalt, then Smith is heard yelling, "I can't go to jail!"
As police continued to struggle with Smith, one officer is seen in the video hitting him.
Smith fires a shot while the officers are piled on top of him, almost hitting his friends sitting on the sidewalk.
"(Smith) is then observed engaging the slide back on the gun and again firing at officers, nearly striking one officer in the face", Davis said. An officer searched Smith and asked about weapons and marijuana.
McKnight was charged with attempted armed robbery, criminal conspiracy, possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, possession of a pistol by someone under 18, and possession of a stolen pistol.
Davis said that Smith tried to "gain control" of the gun during the pat-down and tried to run.
Davis said officers tried to subdue Smith with a stun-gun, but they were unsuccessful.
"No officer wants to be put in this position but these officers were left with no other choice but to protect their lives and return fire", Chief Smith said. The officers opened fire, killing Smith.
The officer told Smith not to reach for something twice when the two suddenly began wrestling each other.
The names of the officers involved were still not revealed as Davis said steps were to be taken for their safety.
"I want our people to feel comfortable".
"I fear that misinformation gets out that says the subject wasn't armed, that the subject didn't shoot", he said, according to Arkansas Online, adding "that is not the case". Prosecutors will determine if the use of deadly force was necessary. He said that once a complete set of video footage is released, there could be an opportunity to look into "what, if anything, could have been done differently".
On Wednesday, people gathered at the curb where the incident occurred, leaving flowers, candles and balloons in honor of Smith.
Smith family lawyer Willard Proctor Jr. said "we're not at a point where we can make any conclusions".
