Varnika Kundu stalking case: Barala gets bail from HC

Chandigarh stalking case Vikash Barla released from jail

23-year-old Vikas had been lodged in jail since August last year. "The bail of Vikas Barala has been approved by Justice Lisa Gill", Barala's counsel Vinod Ghai said.

"No application was moved by the prosecution in the court on whether the alleged accused has so far tried to influence anybody in the matter", he said.

The cross-questioning of IAS officer V S 's daughter revealed her auto had broken down a day before the incident, on August 3, and she was dropped the next day in Sector 8 to pick up her vehicle at 11.15pm, more than an hour before Barala and his friend Ashish allegedly began to chase her in their auto. Pandit claimed her uncle and father wrote the complaint and her signatures were forged, allegations Varnika denied. "If this can happen in Chandigarh, it can happen anywhere", she earlier wrote in a Facebook post.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court had granted Vikas Barla bail on Thursday. "The court has assured us that if Barala tries to influence the witnesses, we can apply for cancellation of bail", he said.

Subhash Barala promised co-operation of his son in the police probe and several pleas were made but a trial court rejected their plea for bail four times until he was finally given bail.

Vikas and Ashish, who have both studied law, have denied the charges. "And if the court thinks it's OK to release him on bail, then I don't challenge that decision".

A top BJP leader's son who was booked for stalking and attempting to abduct a Chandigarh-based woman previous year was granted bail today.

The Chandigarh Police had arrested the duo under non-bailable sections.

They were arrested again on August 9 after they joined the investigation and were charged with attempted abduction under sections 365 and 511 of the IPC.
