US Soldier Wounded in Apparent Afghan Insider Attack

NATO's Resolute Support mission in Afghanistan says a US soldier has been wounded in what it calls an "active ground engagement". "One U.S. service member was wounded and is in stable condition at a medical treatment facility", he said.

The mission was in Mohmand Valley in Nangarhar Province.

Gresback said they were investigating the incident. The US has recently relaxed those rules to allow more embedding of troops in Afghan forces.

The incident occurred yesterday as USA soldiers were patrolling in the Islamic State-stronghold of Achin in Nangarhar province, according to Hakim Khan, a commander of the government militia involved in the incident. The militants are active in several southern districts of Nangarhar, including Achin.

The Pentagon has announced that they are investigating an incident in which a USA soldier was wounded after being shot by a pro-government Afghan militia in the Nangarhar Province. The insurgent group often issues inflated casualty tolls for such incidents.

A spokesman for the Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.

Several southern districts in Nangarhar house IS and Taliban bases.

USA and Afghan forces have been carrying out ground and air operations against IS fighters in Nangarhar province bordering Pakistan.

The U.S. military bombed members of an Afghan government militia who were on the front lines of the battle against the Islamic State in eastern Afghanistan, killing at least 13 fighters after at least one opened fire on U.S. Special Forces soldiers deployed there, Afghan officials said Thursday.

Achin is the same district where a United States soldier was killed and four others wounded during a New Year's Day combat operation.
