United States says air strike kills two militants in Somalia

A Kenyan official says suspected members of the Somalia-based extremist group al-Shabab have killed five police officers in the northern county of Mandera.

The U.S. military killed two al-Shabaab terrorists and destroyed an explosives-laden vehicle in an airstrike in Somalia, the U.S. Africa Command said in a statement released on Wednesday.

Three police reservists and two administration police died in the initial attack while more fatalities happened even as militants ambushed first respondents to the scene.

The attack took place as officers, including reservists, regular police and administration police, patrolled the risky stretch before they were ambushed by militants.

The militants had "waylaid the unsuspecting patrol team".

In November, two police vehicles were burnt to ashes in the same area, compelling police to stop escorting buses.

Apparently, a contingent of General Service Unit personnel who responded to the attack were ambushed and their truck burnt by the militants.

Buses on the Mandera-Nairobi route have since switched to Marsabit-Moyale road, which is considered safer.

This is the latest such airstrike in a series that have killed up to 20 militants in less than a month.

The attack comes few days after suspected militants attacked Ijara AP camp and police station in the neighbouring Garissa County.
