Trump thinks Oprah won't run, says he'd defeat her anyway
Oprah Winfrey's impassioned speech at the 75th Golden Globe Awards sparked rumors that it was her unofficial declaration for a 2020 presidential run.
"I think lessons we all learned from watching Hillary's run, and how her ambition was unfavorably and unfairly viewed, coupled with Oprah's existing popularity, could give Oprah a strong start", Palmieri said.
The president added that he appeared on one of the media mogul's final shows and knows her "very well".
But Trump said Tuesday he doesn't think she will ultimately put her name in the ring. What's missing? Experience in government, a demonstrated grasp of public policy, political skills, including the ability to negotiate and compromise across partisan and global lines, and, most of all, a desire to serve.
Oprah Winfrey was an influential backer of the 2008 presidential campaign of then-senator Barack Obama.
In September, columnist John Podhoretz wrote in the New York Post that Winfrey is "uniquely positioned, should she wish to commit herself, to seek the Democratic nomination for president and challenge Trump in 2020".
Actress Alyssa Milano and others quickly chimed in, pointing out that Ivanka Trump's tweet doesn't mention that her father faces accusations of sexual misconduct by several women. Her longtime partner, Stedman Graham, and her close friend Gayle King have not done much to tamp down the chatter.
While accepting the Cecil B. DeMille Award for "outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment" at Sunday's Golden Globe Awards ceremony, Oprah Winfrey offered a genuinely inspiring, magnificent speech to viewers in attendance and at home. "If she runs, she will destroy anyone in front of her".
King said: "She loves this country and would like to be of service in some way".
"They're going to run her like she's this glorious woman that cares, meanwhile she's literally the wingman going out and getting tail-and I guess you're going to say it, I'm going to say it-she's well known with Weinstein to enjoy tail together".
But the message is more mixed when it comes to whether she is seriously thinking about jumping into politics.
Being president isn't like hosting a talk show or running a media brand.
Still, while some Democrats would embrace Winfrey's outsider-celebrity status as the party's answer to Trump, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., noted that Winfrey, like Trump, lacks any kind of experience in government. But presidential elections tend to be personality driven, and that could work in Winfrey's favor. People are begging her, please run, please run, please run. She told her story.
But look, I get it. Democrats have been traumatized by recent events, and one of the responses is to throw up your hands and say, "Fine then". "It would be a pretty good ticket".
