Kim and President Donald Trump have engaged in an increasingly sharp war of words as North Korea's weapons programs advance, each of them belittling the other. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis insisted the move was a practical necessity to accommodate the Olympics and was not a political gesture.
Now, the North Korean leader is of course interested in cooling the situation down, he went on.

Trump's public response to the intra-Korean meeting has been mostly positive though at times tinged with skepticism. The president believes it is necessary to conduct negotiations in the issue of denuclearization of the Korean peninsula, TASS reports.
"I believe, Mr Kim Jong-un has certainly won this round", he added, also saying that the leader "has a nuclear (charge) and a ... missile with a range of up to 13,000 kilometers that can reach nearly any place on Earth or at least any territory of his potential adversary".
Asked if he had spoken to Kim, Trump said "I don't want to comment on it". I'm not saying I have or haven't.
The administration had been due to hold a Cabinet-level meeting this week to sharpen its economic and military options for dealing with North Korea.
The talks resulted in the decision that North Korea would participate in the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, in February. Nikki Haley signaled that North Korea might be preparing for another missile test.
Trump recently told South Korean President Moon Jae-in that he's willing to speak with Noth Korea "under the right circumstances", while Moon said Trump deserves "big credit" for helping spark the first talks between North and South Korea in more than two years.
In a story posted on the North Korea analysis website 38 North, Alexander Vorontsov, the head of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russia Academy of Sciences, conveyed the unstable North Korean atmosphere based on a trip to Pyongyang in mid-November that lasted several days and his conversations with foreign ministry officials there.
Such military action, though, would reportedly not lead to a major war with the East Asian state. It said the U.S.is still trying to crush the regime just as it has in the past, and called the regime's nuclear capability (quote)"the most powerful sword" it has to secure peace.
"It may be risky after the Olympics", the lawmaker said.
