Trump cancels UK visit over 'bad' new US embassy deal

A police officer stands guard at the American Embassy in central London

"Bad deal", Trump wrote on Twitter, incorrectly crediting the decision to move the U.S. Embassy to Barack Obama, despite the fact that it was made under George W. Bush for security reasons.

At the time, U.S. Ambassador Robert Tuttle said the decision to move to the five-acre site on the south side of the River Thames came after a "long and careful process".

As for the president's tweet condemning the Obama administration for a "bad" deal on the new USA diplomatic compound in London, the US embassy's own website indicates that the announcement of the move was made in the final weeks of President George W. Bush's administration.

Sections of the United Kingdom media claim that the visit was cancelled amid fears of mass protests as the embassys plan to move from Mayfair to Nine Elms in London pre-dated the Barack Obama administration and was first reported in October 2008, when George W Bush was still the president. "It's a signal to the world that this relationship will get stronger and get better".

Mr Trump was also scheduled to hold talks with Mrs May in No 10, with February 26 and 27 marked in the diary.

A petition to stop Trump - who is deeply unpopular in Britain - from making an official state visit garnered over 1.8 million signatures previous year amid a backlash over his controversial travel ban, CNN reported.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan said it was a mistake for Prime Minister Theresa May to have invited Trump in the first place.

The question of the Trump state visit has been thorny in Britain ever since Theresa May extended the invitation after her early and awkward visit to Washington DC in January.

He concluded: "Let's hope that Donald Trump also revisits the pursuit of his divisive agenda". It seems he's finally got that message.

Mrs May and Mr Trump fell out spectacularly in November over his retweeting of anti-Muslim videos posted online by the deputy leader of the far-right Britain First group, Jayda Fransen. "We will not allow USA -U.K. relations to be endangered by some puffed up pompous popinjay in City Hall".

Officials have already moved into the £750million U.S. embassy near Battersea Power Station in South London.

But the American presence has not been appreciated by the embassy's neighbors in recent years.

There had always been security concerns about the Grosvenor Square site, dating back to the late 1990s after attacks on USA embassies in Africa. Some local residents opposed measures that they felt would detract from one of London's plushest neighbourhoods while others feared not enough was being done to ensure they would not be caught up in any attack. But, as the embassy's website notes, the USA managed to fund it entirely through the sale of other US -owned properties in London, including, according to The Washington Post, the current embassy.
