Trump calls DACA deal by group of Senators a "big step backwards"

Trump later declared "the language used by me at the DACA meeting [Thursday] was tough, but this was not the language used". "For the reasons DACA was instituted, and for the reasons tweeted by President Trump, this order finds that the public interest will be served by DACA's continuation". Earlier this week, a federal judge blocked the administration's plans to end the program.

"A lot of those anchors sent us letters saying that was one of the greatest meetings they've ever witnessed", he said.

"Now, Mexico may not want to make the NAFTA deal, which is OK, then I'll terminate NAFTA, which I think would be frankly a positive for our country", Trump told the Journal.

The decision came after Trump met with seven Republicans senators January 4 about immigration and several asked why there were multiple points of contacts and not one point person on the issue for the administration, a senior White House official said.

A bipartisan group of senators has negotiated an immigration reform package to protect so-called "Dreamers" and enhance border security, Politico reports. Their parents could get renewable legal status although they couldn't become citizens.

BECERRA: It is time for Congress to give us a lasting solution that will leave no doubt that the DREAMers are Americans and that they are here to stay. -Mexican border and other changes to immigration law that are opposed by most congressional Democrats.

According to an opinion piece the two wrote for The Wall Street Journal on Tuesday, along with GOP Reps.

A remark from President Trump has now possibly jeopardized the negotiations. He declared that the Homeland Security secretary has the authority to grant the sort of temporary protections from deportation that DACA provided.

The Trump administration "looks forward to vindicating its position in further litigation", Justice Department spokesman Devin O'Malley said in a statement.

"We need permanent legislative solution to DACA, not a drawn out legal fight, and this ruling ups the ante for Congress to act", said John Rowe, Exelon Chairman Emeritus and IBIC Co-Chair, "There is only one real path forward: either Congress will pass a legislative solution to DACA, or almost 800,000 DACA recipients will lose their ability to live and work legally in this country".

But until now, Trump's support has been contingent on Congress appropriating money to build a wall on the U.S.

"We've got this bipartisan group. Hopefully they'll eventually come together", Thune said.
