Trae Young Leads Sooners to Series Sweep of TCU
Following two free throws by TCU forward Kouat Noi and a one of two trip at the free throw line for Young, the Sooners eventually found themselves with the ball with 15.6 seconds and TCU ahead by one, 87-86. Fisher's layup with 1.4 seconds left forced overtime. He also scored a career-high 10 threes as the Sooners broke the program record with 19 made three-pointers. TCU's four losses include Saturday's overtime heartbreaker, a one-point double overtime loss to Texas on Wednesday, a 90-89 loss in their first meeting against Oklahoma, and an 88-84 loss to Kansas in a game TCU led for a significant chunk.
Young finished tying his career high with 43 points, adding 11 rebounds and seven assists to help OU improve to 14-2 overall and 4-1 in the Big 12.
Oklahoma freshman point guard Trae Young spent the majority of the first 30 minutes trying to get his teammates involved. When the Sooners managed to get to the line, they couldn't hit shots effectively, going 13-of-22 from the stripe.
A deep 3-pointer by Young helped push Oklahoma's lead to 57-52, but Brodziansky's putback jam tied it at 65. Young was 6-of-9 from beyond the arc in the second half and overtime. I knew I needed to pick it up offensively and defensively.
But it was fellow freshman Brady Manek that caught fire early.
In the second half and overtime period alone, the OU freshman nailed five threes and scored 24 points.
It was a much different look from coach Lon Kruger going down the stretch.
"Yea, Doo's making great progress", Kruger said. He's a big body from a rebounding standpoint.
Remember the shirtless guy who took halfcourt shots at halftime last game? "I had Kendrich on me at the beginning of the game he's playing good defense and I feel like we played well around that and got open and made some shots". He also notched his ninth double-double of the season, the most of any player in the Big 12.
TCU's next two games are against unranked opponents before a January 22 clash with No. 2 West Virginia, while the Sooners have two unranked opponents on tap ahead of a January 23 meeting with No. 12 Kansas.
Young and Oklahoma will be in action again on Tuesday against Kansas State.
