Toyota's new 2019 Avalon was just announced at the 2018 North American International Auto Show, and the new model includes a long-awaited and welcome addition: Apple's CarPlay platform, a first for a Toyota vehicle, according to AppleInsider. As such, the vehicle giant isn't quite going toe-to-toe with smartphone-friendly rivals like Honda or Volkswagen, which offer Android Auto and CarPlay across a wide range of designs.
More information is conveyed to the driver through a 7-inch screen in the gauge cluster and an available 10-inch head-up display projected onto the windshield.
On the 2019 Avalon, users will be able to interact with CarPlay through the 9-inch capacitive touchscreen.
"A buyer who appreciates all premium qualities that Avalon is known for and also wants what we call 'athletic charisma.' With the limited and XLE, Avalaon stays true to our existing, loyal guests who appreciate authentic luxury".
This is quite surprising as a mass market feature like Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are some of the things which a carmaker like Toyota should have acted quickly on. Toyota also designed one of the Avalon's center-console cupholders to double as a device holder.
Although Toyota did not give exact power figures for the engines, both are similar dimensionally and have identical compression ratios to the Camry's powerplants: 301 hp and 267 lb-ft for the 2GR-FKS V-6 and 203 hp and 184 lb-ft for the A25A-FXS four-banger hybrid. The hybrid's battery pack is located under the rear passenger seat. All trims get Eco, Normal, and Sport modes, and Touring trims also get a Sport+ setting.
Toyota builds the Avalon in Georgetown, KY. The list includes collision avoidance gear such as automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warnings, active lane control, blind-spot monitors, rear cross-traffic alerts, and automatic high beams on every model.
