Tour down under- stage 5

Daryl Impey leads the Tour Down Under with one stage remaining

Porte distanced all his rivals with two searing attacks and secured the stage win but Impey paced himself up the final climb, coming past a number of challengers to take second on the stage.

But provided nothing goes wrong in the Adelaide street race, Porte said Impey would win the Tour for the first time.

While Sunday's stage looks in the balance, given Impey and Porte are tied for the lead, Mitchelton-Scott have much stronger sprint credentials for Impey than Porte's BMC squad.

He finished the stage 14 seconds back of Australian victor Richie Porte, but only dropped one spot in the overall standings.

"If I start going then Caleb Ewan and guys like this are going to go for the intermediates too".

Despite not winning the overall title again, Porte is pleased with his performance this week. "I'm happy with where I am all things considered".

World champion Peter Sagan showed his class when he won the fourth stage of the UCI season-opening Tour Down Under in South Australia on Friday, taking the overall lead in the process.

He said Saturday was the toughest of his five Willunga stage wins.

Jay McCarthy (Bora-hansgrohe) clung to his wheel, and Team Sky debutant Egan Arley Bernal fought back well, but Porte's second kick put paid to their chase.

The South African stopped the clock eight seconds after Porte to claim the race lead on countback.

Ewan lost more than 11 minutes to tumble to 65th, but his Mitchelton-Scott team took consolation as Daryl Impey, second on the day, now sits second overall, two seconds down on Sagan.
