The Thomas Fire as Seen From Around Southern California

The fire burned almost 282,000 acres and destroyed more than 1,000 structures.

The Thomas Fire, considered the largest fire in California's modern history, has finally been fully contained.

Closures have been ordered for areas of Los Padres National Forest affected by the blaze.

Two people, a firefighter and a civilian, died in the fire. Please write "Thomas Fire Fund" in the memo.

California's five-year average for wildfires during that time frame is 4,787 and 202,737 acres burned. The state's fires scorched more than 505,900 acres, more than double last year's burned acreage count.

Cal Fire reported 6,982 fires in California from January 1 to Dec. 17, including the devastating North Bay fires in October and the Thomas fire, which began in early December. The fire destroyed more than 1,060 structures. "People could still lose their lives walking around in those areas".

Her home in Carpinteria is safe but like so many others getting to Santa Barbara has been impossible. Nearly the entire community of Montecito ― around 10,000 people ― was as emergency responders continued to sift through the rubble.

However, Santa Barbara County spokeswoman Amber Anderson said that number could still fluctuate.

Water, mud and debris continue to move, hampering Caltrans progress in clearing USA 101.

With the fire now essentially out, officials are focusing on repairing damage from the firefighting efforts, and assessing risks from flooding and debris flows.
