Steam reveals 2017's biggest earners, including The Witcher 3, H1Z1 and PUBG

PlayerUnnown’s Battlegrounds coming to PS4 but when

That means there's no actual ranking-we just know roughly where each game placed.

The Witcher III also appears, likely boosted by anniversary sales for the franchise and sheer popularity on PC, and Ark Survival Evolved comes in after launching out of Early Access previous year. Many of these lists are determined by total revenue, but one in particular focuses on games that were most popular among Steam players as well. This year, more subcategories have been included in the top selling lists, including virtual reality (VR) videogames for the first time.

Steam is essentially the home of PC gaming at this point, so if you want to see what games did well this year, then there is no better place than Steam's top seller list. As we'd expect, the year started out slow in January and lagged again in the summer, but numerous spring, fall, and winter months featured a bunch of games that sold well out of the gate.

Valve also published a list of the highest-earning new games of 2017, split by month of their release. Still, it features plenty of great games, such as Slime Rancher and PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds. Each of those games peaked with more than 100,000 simultaneous players this year. However, some other new titles like Divinity: Original Sin 2 and Ghost Recon: Wildlands and a few familiar faces like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Rainbow Six: Siege also worked their way towards the top of the best-sellers list.
