The first time I ever realized this was a possibility, was when I got a phone call in Birmingham, Alabama when I was sitting there rehabbing my shoulder from the new head coach of the New Orleans Saints, Sean Payton.
This took me back to my rec basketball days as a ninth grader. "Obviously I'm here because he believed in me", said Brees.
In theory, the Saints could pursue and sign a free-agent quarterback from another team, whether it's Washington quarterback Kirk Cousins or Vikings quarterback Case Keenum, who just beat the Saints (if you haven't heard).
In leading the Saints to the Divisional Round of this year's playoffs, Brees threw for 4,334 yards and 23 touchdowns while completing 72% of his pass attempts.
"Certainly the relationship with this city will always play a strong role in me being here and wanting to play and finish my career here", Brees said.
"We're just two days removed, so I really haven't given it a ton of thought - other than, I know where my mindset's been the whole time, and that's that I'll be here".
"So while I think we do have a talented team, I know that each year you have to go out and have to prove it. He wanted me to be his quarterback".
Payton wore a black track suit with Saints emblems on it, as if to symbolize that he is off and running in his effort to build upon the success of 2017.
Meanwhile, 34-year-old right tackle Zach Strief, a Week 1 starter who spent most of the season on injured reserve, said he hasn't decided whether he'll retire.
"No matter how you feel in the moment, sometimes when you're in training camp and in your 12th year, you're like, 'Man, this is ridiculous".
If you have any questions about his ability to play, may I refer you to the second half of the Saints near playoff comeback against the Vikings? I think that's one of the things that I look forward to.
