A spokeswoman for Immigration and Customs Enforcement said the federal agents involved were not with ICE but were officers with the Federal Protective Services who guard federal buildings. January 12, 2018: Two Caribbean-roots, New York City lawmakers were arrested by New York City police officers Thursday as they protested the detention of a Trinidad-born immigrant.

Council members Jumaane Williams (D-Brooklyn) and Ydanis Rodriguez (D-Manhattan) were out in support of Ravi Ragbir, an undocumented immigrant and executive director of the New Sanctuary Coalition of New York City, during their arrest. He became a full-time organizer for the New Sanctuary Coalition of New York City, one of the largest coalitions in the city that focused on immigrant rights, in 2010.

"Ravi Ragbir was detained today by ICE during a regular check-in appointment".

Several arrests were made as demonstrators rallied outside a federal building in New York City on Thursday, January 11, in support of Ravi Ragbir, an immigrant rights activist who was reportedly detained by immigration officials that morning. For a number of years, Ragbir's check-ins were routine.

Ragbir, an immigrant from Trinidad, has faced the threat of deportation since he was convicted of wire fraud 16 years ago.

"Ravi Ragbir means everything to this city", said Rev. Kaji Dousa, co-chair of The New Sanctuary Coalition and senior pastor of Park Avenue Christian Church, in an emailed statement. "A longtime New Yorker, a husband and a father, Ravi is beloved by all of us who have had the privilege of working with him to make NY a welcoming community for all of its residents". Johnson called for Ragbir's release and a stay of removal. Kirsten Gillibrand and Chuck Schumer, both of NY.

Ragbir has previously spent months in detention despite the fact that he is in the country legally, Patch reported.

In each review, the courts have uniformly held that Ragbir does not have a legal basis to remain in the US, ICE said.

"He has since exhausted his petitions and appeals through the immigration courts, the Board of Immigration Appeals, and the US District Court". ICE justified its decision and said he will remain in custody pending removal to Trinidad.

"We are definitely going to investigate what happened with our police officers because I am concerned to know exactly what happened, why it happened and if anything happened that was not appropriate in the handling of the protesters, that needs to be acted on", de Blasio said on his weekly appearance on WNYC's Brian Lehrer Show.

Williams is seen in the video and photos in a gray suit and red socks.

More protests were scheduled for Thursday evening in front of the detention center where Ragbir was being held.
