Police warn against 'highly addictive' Girl Scout cookies

Girl Scout Cookie sales begin Saturday January 13th and run through Sunday February 25th

Throughout the years, many different flavors have come and gone (does anyone remember the Lemon Chalet Cremes or chocolate-covered, caramel-filled Juliettes?) but a few remain as staples: Thin Mints, Do-si-dos, and shortbread Trefoils are the best-selling varieties. Police in ME are warning cookie lovers to beware because Girl Scout cookie season is in full swing. Marketing and Communications Specialist Shannon Peterson with Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska says this year's cookie line-up will not only feature everyone favorites, but will also see the return of last year's popular addition. "These skills are essential for 21st century leadership". Most Girl Scout Cookies are $4 per box, except for the specialty cookies Toffee-tastics and S'mores, which are $5 per box. At the time, cookies were packaged in wax bags, sealed with a sticket and sold door -to-door.

Through sales, Girl Scouts learn various skills such as goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics.

"The sales start Saturday and the girls take order forms and they can call friends and family to take cookie orders", said Parsons.

According to gsoh.org, the first known cookie sale by the Girl Scouts was in 1917. This revenue is used to benefit girls, some of it directly by remaining in the Girl Scout troop treasuries, and some of it indirectly by funding council-led programs for Girl Scouts.

Police joked the "Cookie Cartel", also known as cute and innocent girl scouts, lure unsuspecting buyers into a good cause.
